The team that changed the game - on and off the field
This story began with 27 portraits.
Portrait of Bukayo Saka.

At the start of 2020, Matt Small was commissioned to create a series of 27 portraits for the Football Association - each representing a member of the England men’s football squad and manager Gareth Southgate for UEFA Men’s EUROs.
Portrait of Jordan Pickford.

The collection was installed at St George’s Park and remained on display throughout the team’s EURO 2020 campaign, as part of Southgate’s well-being programme designed to celebrate the individuality and unity of his players.
Portrait of Phil Foden.

A short film of Matt creating the works in his studio aired on ITV ahead of the tournament, introducing millions to the emotional depth and material energy of the project.
Portrait of Raheem Sterling.

Rendered in oil and reclaimed wood, the portraits are textured, layered, and deeply human - reflecting both the diversity of the squad and the complexity of modern British identity and capturing a team that stood for something far greater than sport.
Portrait of Sam Johnston.

Since then, This is England has been exhibited at several prestigious institutions, including the National Football Museum, Guildhall Art Gallery, and Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery.
Portrait of Dominic Calvert.

These portraits are the heart of the exhibition. A team. A nation. A progressive England.
Portrait of Gareth Southgate.

And now This Is England is being displayed at Broadway throughout SEEN Lewisham between 3-12 October between 10-5 throughout the day.
Don't miss these incredible portraits.
Portrait of Harry Kane.
