The Book Of Traps And Lessons Live

A handful of words often tell you everything you need to know. When asked, who is Kate Tempest? She gives a brief, albeit telling answer…
“Kate Tempest is the words,” she responds.

For a woman whose public life remains rooted in poetic magnetism, five words serve as an apropos summation. Yet, her actions beg you to surmise so much more.

That’s because you haven’t ever seen, heard, or experienced anyone quite like her. Tempest uncovers the missing link between the Golden Ages of literature and hip-hop. The London-born BRIT Award-nominated spoken word artist, rapper, poet, novelist, and playwright rhymes with a century-turning fury. Since her emergence in 2011, she has redefined what it means to be a wordsmith in the Modern Age. To date, she has published three poetry collections, staged three plays, and released two studio albums—Everybody Down (shortlisted for the 2014 Mercury Prize), and Let Them Eat Chaos (shortlisted for the 2017 Mercury Prize). Along the way, she entranced audiences on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, NPR’s “Tiny Desk,” and more. Not to mention, she garnered widespread critical acclaim from The New York Times, The New Yorker, Forbes, and more, to name a few.

In the midst of this whirlwind journey, she performed a passage of her popular 75-minute narrative poem, Brand New Ancients, on Charlie Rose. Legendary producer and American Recordings founder Rick Rubin caught the show, tracked down her phone number, and made a call. This set a series of events in motion that led to her 2019 debut for American, The Book of Traps and Lessons. However, she took a bit of a creative detour to get there by releasing Let Them Eat Chaos first. “We were trying to find the right tone for The Book of Traps and Lessons,” she admits. “The demos were great, but they weren’t right for what we wanted to do together. So, we put The Book of Traps and Lessons on hold and made Let Them Eat Chaos instead. We couldn’t have made this record without making Let Them Eat Chaos. We couldn’t have made Let Them Eat Chaos without trying to make The Book of Traps and Lessons.”

Along the way, the producer pushed Tempest into new territory. Over the course of five years since their initial call, her process markedly evolved. She increased the attention to detail and working with Dan Carey, she developed an enriched perspective that would invariably inform the entire body of work “Rick has such an intense ear that when he listens to you, you hear things in your own work that you had no idea were there – both strengths and weaknesses,” she explains. “He encouraged me to look for the ‘essential’ in my own practice, to turn everything that wasn’t integral down, and get closer to the core of things. Dan and I generated a lot of demos finding what he was looking for – this freedom from the beat. When we had a breakthrough, it was intense. I just felt elation. ‘Hold Your Own’ was the first song that really made sense to us. That helped to determine the direction of the whole thing. My vision for the album as a whole, thematically, came into being after the vision for the album as a form, which is the first time I’ve made music that way.”

As a result, the tracks comprise a narrative thread. Intentionally cryptic and often obtuse, her delivery lights a fire on the opener “Thirsty” that burns brightly through the conclusion “People’s Faces.” Meant to be listened to as a suite in one sitting, it never explains “what is hopefully implicit,” but rather encourages and provokes a gut reaction in the most unexpected manner via “the words”.

Ultimately, she fosters a lasting connection between those words.
“I hope that people feel connected,” she leaves off. “I hope they connect with the work, and that this connection enables them to connect with themselves, and that this connection encourages a deeper connection to others. It might sound like high hopes. At this stage in the game, you have to know your motives. Otherwise, why even try?”

UK Unsigned 2019

Sunday 6 October at 7pm

The UK’s biggest independent talent showcase

Sunday 6 October at 7pm

The UK’s biggest independent talent showcase

After 20 years of operation, UK UNSIGNED is the UK’s biggest independent talent showcase project for (non-televised) talent, with more categories and opportunities than any other production. Their showcases and workshops around the country extend to over 20 categories, providing the broadest base to consistently give new talent a platform to showcase their skills.

As they celebrate their 20th year, this season’s participants will have opportunities to win up to £20,000 worth of prizes. For some categories this includes overseas opportunities such as:

· Reggae Category (Song for Jamaica): Opportunity to perform at Rebel Salute, one of Jamaica’s premiere Reggae Festivals.

· Solo Dance Category (U CAN DANCE): Opportunity to perform in Antigua as part of the annual U CAN DANCE Caribbean showcase.

· Overall UK UNSIGNED Winner: The UK UNSIGNED Winners’ Winner (best performer across all categories) will get to showcase in Atlanta, USA in 2020.

This season’s series will culminate in their first ever National UK UNSIGNED Week between October 6 – 12. Activities will start with the UK UNSIGNED Grand Finals at the Broadway Theatre in Catford and ends with the Silver Dress Ball in Pall Mall (Oct 12).

UK UNSIGNED will be looking to select performers from the categories of cover singers, singer/songwriters, individual dancers, comedians, poets, MCs and dance groups to perform across National UK UNSIGNED Week as both contestants and as special performers. For the first time ever they shall also be ensuring that our categories include disabled participants, which is being co-ordinated by one of their members, Wind of Change in Milton Keynes.

Each category winner will be given a business support package within their prizes which will assist in developing strategies to enable them to be self-sustaining through their talent. Over the past 20 years, UK UNSIGNED have seen many changes and challenges to unsigned artists. They fully understand the real support needs they require to pursue their potential instead of pushing unrealistic pipe dreams.

Other past successes of UK UNSIGNED participants include: Katie Melua and Leona Lewis who went on to become one of the UK’s highest earning female singers. The Flawless Dance Group, who continuously tour the UK with their special brand of theatre dance productions. However, the majority of our participants go on to pursue long term sustainable performance careers such as:

· Natalie Chua: Recently casted in “Bat Out Of Hell”: Dominion Theatre

· HBoss: SABA & UK Youth Ambassador

· Kathryn Kitchener: Casted in “Love Struck”: Cockpit Theatre, London

Our UK UNSIGNED showcases are part of a fundraising strategy to support their creative development projects. The main projects are the HiCrEc Project, Youth Apprenticeship Programme and You Digital Network (YDN).

The HiCrEc (Hidden Creative Economy) project works with creative industry practitioners who operate without mainstream support or recognition. Through various initiatives they help them to keep the productions of their talent maintained across the mainstream.

Their Youth Apprenticeship Programme works with excluded young people from disadvantaged communities. Supporting their transition from dysfunctional lifestyles through to gaining the skills to attain mainstream inclusion and long term careers.

Within the Your Digital Network (YDN) programme they help people to develop new skills within digital technology so they can pursue either employment opportunities of commercial start ups that can suit today’s environment.

Whilst music remains the main focus of UK UNSIGNED, other areas such as UK UNSIGNED Film, UK UNSIGNED Drama and UK UNSIGNED Fashion have given new UK based talent a real platform from which they can gain a stake in the Creative Industries. UK UNSIGNED are even introducing a skills development category where participants can explore opportunities around set design, sound engineering and event management.
